Carmela “Honey” (née Curreri) Ford, 93, passed away on Thursday, November 27, 2025, at her home in Green Brook, NJ.
Born in Brooklyn, NY, to the late Charles and Anna Curreri, Carmela spent most of her early years in Plainfield, surrounded by a large Italian family. She graduated from Plainfield High School before attending Penn Hall College, where she studied Medical Secretary work. In 1956, she and her late husband, James, settled in South Plainfield, where they raised their five children. In 2005, Carmela relocated to Green Brook, where she had lived since.
After graduating from Penn Hall with an associate’s degree, she began working with Dr. Ellis P. Singer in Plainfield, where she remained for 25 years, retiring in 1990.
Outside of work, Carmela was very active in the community. As a founder of the Twin Mothers Club of the Greater Plainfield Area, she met women who would go on to become lifelong friends. She was also a devoted member of the Sacred Heart Parish in South Plainfield. But it was her innate heart, her kindness, generosity, and unwavering compassion, that truly guided her actions, embraced those around her, and left a lasting impact on family, friends, and the community alike.
Carmela will be remembered as an incredible and devoted mother and grandmother. When her children were young, she served as a Pop Warner cheerleading coach and quickly became an avid sports fan, cheering on her boys and, later, her grandchildren. She devoted herself fully to the role of mom and grandma, cherishing the moments spent with her family above all else.
Predeceased by her husband, James C. Ford, Carmela leaves behind her children: Caroline Sofo of Basking Ridge; Pat and Jim Rennie of Oxford; Jim and Michele Ford of Mantoloking; Tim Ford of Green Brook; and Rob and Denise Ford of Bedminster. She will also be missed by her grandchildren: Jim Rennie and his partner Rachel, Mike Rennie, Ben Ford and his wife Juli, James Ford, Tana Ford, Trey Ford, Sophia Ford, Colin Sofo and his wife Kirsten, Julia Sofo and her husband Aren, and Nicholas Sofo; great-grandchildren James “JD,” Penelope, and Maeve; and brother Anthony Curreri, as well as a host of extended relatives and friends.
A visitation will be held at the McCriskin–Gustafson Home for Funerals, 2425 Plainfield Avenue, South Plainfield, on Tuesday, December 2, 2025, from 4 PM to 8 PM.
A funeral Mass will be held at Sacred Heart RC Church, 149 South Plainfield Avenue, on Wednesday, December 3, 2025, at 10 AM. Family and friends are invited to gather at the funeral home prior to Mass, beginning at 9 AM.
Burial will follow at St. Gertrude’s Cemetery, 53 Inman Avenue, Colonia, NJ.
In lieu of flowers, the Ford family has asked that donations be made to the Alzheimer’s’ Association, in Carmela’s name.
