Obituary of John J. Mai

Piscataway, NJ - John J. Mai, 77, passed away at his home on August 6, 2015 after a brief illness. Born in Phillipsburg, he grew up in Avenel and has been a resident of Piscataway most of his life. In his earlier years, John worked for George's Gas Station in Avenel, Bolex Camera Shop in Long Island and Chinon in Springfield. John owned Avenel Camera Repair in Avenel and he worked for a short time at Campbell's Soup and most recently at the Exxon in Piscataway. He loved to hunt and fish and could always be found outside in his yard feeding the birds or in his garden sharing his harvest with his family and friends. John enjoyed country line dancing with his friends, was a member of Our Lady of Fatima RC Church and formerly active with the Piscataway Boy Scouts. He is predeceased by his parents Philip and Margaret (Gallagher) Mai and by his siblings; Pauline Mai, Florence Schink, twin brother William, Philip, Gus, Elizabeth Baumle and Susan McQueeny. John leaves behind his loving wife Joanne (Glascott) Mai and their children; Karen Appleby and her husband Robert of Bethlehem, PA, John Mai, Jr. of Piscataway and Deborah Mai of Hillsborough. He will be missed by his adored grandsons Robert and Bryan Appleby; his dear siblings; Margaret Kato, Victoria Stavick, Frank Mai, Catherine Schweitzer, Mary Johansen and Grace Rimkus and his faithful companion; his dog Toby. Visitation will take place in Piscataway Funeral Home, 18 Stelton Road, Piscataway, NJ 08854 on Monday, August 10, 2015 from 2-4 & 7-9pm and on Tuesday, August 11, 2015 from 9:15 am until 9:45 am. Funeral services will begin 9:45 am in the funeral home on Tuesday, August 11, 2015 followed by a 10:30 am Mass of Christian Burial at Our Lady of Fatima Roman Catholic Church in Piscataway. Prayers will follow mass in the chapel of Somerset Hills Memorial Park in Basking Ridge. Donations sent to www.mdsfoundation.org would be appreciated.
