South Plainfield - Joaquim DeSousa, 86, died on Tuesday, October 27, 2015 at home. Born and raised in Nova Sintra Brava, on the Islands of Cape Verde, Joaquim arrived to the United States in 1948 living in Pawticket, Rhode Island. During the very early 1950's, Joaquim enlisted in the U.S. Army and was stationed in Germany until his honorable discharge. Following his enlistment, Mr. DeSousa then resided in New Bedford, MA., Brooklyn, NY, and Elizabeth, NJ prior to finally settling in South Plainfield in 1977. Joaquim served as Chief Steward for Exxon Mobile, a position he held for nearly 40 years, retiring in 1986. He was an avid NY Yankees fan and enjoyed watching boxing. He is predeceased by his wife Maria who died in 1990, daughter; Adelina DeSousa who died in 1977 and by his brother Joseph. Surviving are his two daughters, Filomena Bullerjohn and her husband Charles of Bayville and Teresa DeSousa of West Orange and his granddaughter Amelia Bullerjohn. Also surviving are his loving companion Maria DePerte and several extended loving relatives and friends. Visitation will be held on Thursday, October 29, 2015 from 2-4 & 7-9pm in the funeral home. Funeral Services will be held on Friday, October 30, 2015 at 9:15am in the South Plainfield Funeral Home, 2456 Plainfield Ave., South Plainfield, NJ 07080 followed by a 10am funeral mass at Sacred Heart RC Church, South Plainfield. Burial will be held privately in the family plot at Mt. Olivet Cemetery, Elizabeth.
