South Plainfield, NJ - Henry F. Phelps, 86, passed away on January 10, 2019 at the Woodlands Care Center in Plainfield. Born in Newark to the late Henry W. and Florence (Biebel) Phelps, Henry resided in Irvington after being released by the military and then settled to South Plainfield in 1958.
An honorably discharged veteran of the United States Army, Henry served proudly during the Korean War. For many years, Henry was a Sheet Metal Worker for Local #22 in Union. He enjoyed arts and crafts, liked woodworking and making tin and copper projects. He took all his projects and colonial pieces to craft shows to share with others. In his earlier days, Henry was extremely active with the South Plainfield Rescue Squad, as Scoutmaster for Boy Scout Troop 309, along with being a member of The Boy Scouts Flint and Steel Organization.
Henry and his wife Joan could be found singing for several churches, especially Crescent Avenue Presbyterian Church in Plainfield.
Henry is survived by his loving wife Joan (Zitniak) Phelps who were married in 1955, daughter Diane Hermann and her husband Walter of South Plainfield, son Keith Phelps and his wife Robin of Bethel, PA, two grandchildren; Paul and Amanda Hermann and two great-grandchildren; Sarah and Emily Hermann.
A memorial gathering will be held on Saturday, January 19, 2019 from 2:00 pm until 5:00 pm at McCriskin-Gustafson Home for Funerals, 2425 Plainfield Avenue, South Plainfield, NJ 07080. A service reflecting Henry's life along with Military Honors will be held at 4:30 pm.
