To Judy and Family my heart goes out to you on your beloved Husband Michael who has fallen asleep in death. Not many words can take away that pain but what can is what God promises at Ps. 34:18 'God is close to the brokenhearted. He saves those who are crushed in spirit.

On behalf of the South Plainfield Police Athletic League, I would like to offer my condolences to the Alvarez family. Mike Alvarez was a special human being, the type of man that made you a better person just by knowing him. Whenever the Police Athletic League was preparing to have a fundraiser or special event, I would get a phone call from Mike: “Christopher, Mike Alvarez. What do you need me to do?" That was Mike- selfless- in a world of selfish people... a man who gave to the community without asking for anything in return. Mike was very good to my family and looked out for anyone lucky enough to call him a friend. South Plainfield has lost one of the good ones. Det. Sgt. Christopher Colucci #1014 SPPD Juvenile Division (908)226-7665 ccolu@sppolice.com

Dear Rutgers University – Newark community members, It is with a heavy heart that I write to share that our community has lost one of its most loyal champions of students, especially student athletes, Mike Alvarez. Throughout his 15 years as Assistant Athletics Director, Mike was a fixture on the sidelines and in the stands, not just as he sought to continuously improve our athletics facilities, but as one of the Scarlet Raiders’ most avid fans. With the exception of watching his grandchildren compete on the field of play, nothing brought him more joy than helping make it possible for our students to make the most of their talents and to cheer them on as they did—and those whose lives he touched here at RU-N number in the thousands. Information about arrangements for memorializing Mike can be found in the warm tribute that our Athletics Department has posted here. As we join Mike’s close colleagues in Athletics and our student athletes in striving to see through the sorrow they, especially, feel right now, we recognize that the loss of someone close to so many can have an impact on us in different ways. Our hearts go out to Mike’s family and extended family, and to the many members of the RU-N family that are feeling his loss.
In shared sorrow, Nancy Cantor Chancellor

The Golon family sends its condolences to the Alvarez family. We've lost yet another stalwart for the kids of South Plainfield. We've got such fond memories of Mike and the guys who ran Pony Tail Softball with such dedication. Of course, I will always remember the many nights at the SPHS football concession stand with Mike and crew, the many laughs, and of course, the too many hot dogs! These years go much too quickly. Rest in peace, Mike. Bob Golon Little Egg Harbor Twp, NJ, formerly of South Plainfield.

It is with my deepest condolences and sympathies to the Alvarez family. I started working with Mike in 2005 when we would plan the NCAS Commencement Ceremony on the Norman Samuels Plaza and/or set up the Golden Dome gym in case of rain. He has always been extremely helpful whenever asked or something was needed. In the last few years, I truly enjoyed listening to his stories about his grandchildren. They were such an important part of who he was and it gave me joy to listen to a grandfather's love because it reminded me of my father's interaction with his grandchildren. Please know that his presence will be deeply missed as part of the RU-N family. Warmest Regards, Sharon Stroye

My heart goes out to all of Mike's family and to everyone who called him FRIEND. I will miss him terribly as he was a man who put everyone else first especially his kids and grandkids. He adored you all and was so proud of his grandkids. He loved watching them at all the sporting events. We in the Booster Club will miss him on Friday night games in the Penthouse! As a close friend who enjoyed the rides to Myrtle Beach for the golf trips, they will never be the same and we had some great times coming and going. To "Uncle Billy" who he really enjoyed being your brother-in-law. To Judy, Katie, Lindsey and Michael I am so sorry I could not attend as I am traveling on business. May GOD be with you all.
