Obituary of Joseph J. Walko
Joseph John Walko, 87, passed away Friday, September 25, 2020.
Born and raised in Carteret, Joe was a resident of South Plainfield since 1968. He spent more than 30 years with Anheuser Busch in Newark as a Machinist, retiring in 1999.
Joe enlisted in the United States Navy at age 18. He served during the Korean War on the USS Rushmore, repair ships and Mine Sweepers rising to the rank of CWO4. He traveled all over the world including a mission to Antarctica. After four years of active duty, he spent 24 years in the Navy Reserves.
Predeceased by his wife, Theresa Ann née Fiore, brothers Mike and Eddie and sister Pauline, Joe was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and friend. He was like a grandfather to his great nieces and nephews. He was an active member of the music boosters and after retiring, volunteered with Mr. Fixit of Middlesex County.
Joe is survived by his sister-in-law Anne, his children; Joseph Walko (Deborah Laurens Walko) of Manhasset Hills, NY, Tina (Robert) Dolan of Hillsborough, Thomas (Paul Melo) of Jersey City, Glenn Valentine of New York City, Melinda (John) Callaghan of Chatham Borough, and grandchildren, Lindsey, Jenna, Kyle, Bryan and Ian and great grandchildren, Finley, Liam, and Jackson.
Visitation will be held on Wednesday, September 30, 2020 from 4-8pm in the McCriskin – Gustafson Home For Funerals 2425 Plainfield Ave. South Plainfield, NJ 07080. He will be laid to rest in the Brigadier General William C. Doyle Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Wrightstown.
