Obituary of Joseph Malt
Joseph Richard Malt, 90, died on Valentine’s Day after a brief illness. He was born to the late Richard (Dick) and Rose Ruggiero Malt in Hazelton, PA. He graduated from Hazelton High School (’48), earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Education from Bloomsburg State College (’58) and a Master’s Degree in Education Administration and Supervision from Montclair State College (’70). He was an airplane mechanic in the U.S. Air Force stationed in Rapid City, SD where he met and married his beloved wife, Alice Jane Calhoon in 1952; they eventually settled in Middlesex.
Joe began teaching Business Education at Plainfield High School in 1958 and left after having been the Department Chair and Acting Principal. In 1972 he became the Principal at David Brearley Regional High School, Kenilworth where he served until his retirement in 1990. He had a love for education and always spoke with pride of his former colleagues and students.
Joe was an active member of Our Lady of Mount Virgin Church where he served as a Eucharistic Minister. He was a jack-of-all trades and could build, fix, or Jury-rig anything. He was a lover of cheap red wine & his dog, Oscar. He was an avid crossword puzzler and gardener, delivering his bounty around town. He was a perpetual caregiver and his greatest devotion was to his children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and anyone that needed help. No one was ever denied or turned away.
He was predeceased by his wife of 63 years, Alice, his daughter, Mary Rose, his parents, and his siblings: Madeline Keselicka, Angeline Podlaseck and Rosemary Tokach.
