Obituary of Ruth J. Delayo

Ruth J. (Shaw) Delayo, 84, passed away in the early hours of Tuesday, March 23, 2021 at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital at Somerset in Somerville.  Born in Newark to the late John and Helen (Peterson) Shaw, Ruth lived in Piscataway until 1971 and moved to Dunellen until 2003.  She then resided in Lavallette until moving in with her daughter in 2019.

 

Ruth enjoyed spending time with her family as a homemaker and was a devout catholic.  She was an officer and member of the Catholic Daughters of America Court Regina Coeli #940 of Dunellen Court St. Bonaventure of Lavellette.  She was also an officer and member of St. Pio Pietreclina, Ladies Auxiliary of the Knights of Columbus 8415 and the Senior Citizen Club; all of Lavallette.  While a member at St. Pio’s, she was a Eucharistic Minister and volunteered taking care of the Altar linens and assisted with their bingo games.  She also belonged to the Watchung Power Squadron and was a volunteer for Simon’s Soup Kitchen.

 

In her spare time, Ruth enjoyed cooking, knitting, playing cards, bowling, loved the NY Yankees and trips to the casino and in her later years, she was an avid surfer.
 

Predeceased by her husband of fifty-two years Charles, Ruth leaves behind her sons; Charles and his wife Anna of Cranford and Michael and his wife Renee of Roselle Park, daughter Ann of Somerville, five grandchildren; Alexandra, Joseph, Daniel, Michael and Madeline as well as her sister Eileen Shaw, brother John D. Shaw, Jr. and many nieces and nephews.

 

Visitation will be held in McCriskin-Gustafson Home for Funerals, 2425 Plainfield Avenue, South Plainfield, NJ 07080 on Friday, March 26, 2021 from 3:00pm until 7:00pm. 

 

Family and friends are invited to attend a Funeral mass at St. John the Evangelist Church in Dunellen on Saturday, March 27, 2021 at 11:00 am.  Burial will follow alongside her husband at Holy Redeemer Cemetery in South Plainfield.

 

In lieu of flowers, donations sent to Boys Town, (www.boystown.org) an organization that saves children and heals families or to the Sisters of Charity of Saint Elizabeth, (www.scnj.org) a ministry that provides education and care to several dioceses within the US, El Salvador and Haiti.
