Obituary of Shirley Ann Martin
Green Brook, NJ – Shirley Ann Martin, 87, passed away on Sunday, January 29, 2023 at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital at Somerset in Somerville. Born in Newark to the late Daniel and Jennie (Cocca) DeVito, Shirley was a resident of Piscataway prior to settling in Green Brook.
Shirley loved caring for her family, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. In her early career, she was a typist and she enjoyed collecting coins, dolls, stamps and comic books. She later became a nanny and had a great love in caring for children. She loved putting her feet in the sand at Atlantic City and Ocean Grove, and playing the slots in the casino and watching races at the Monmouth Racetrack. In her later years, Shirley spent time with her caregiver Lois going to the park watching the kids play, visiting the ducks at the local pond, and watching her favorite TV shows like Price is Right and Wheel of Fortune.
A caring mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, Shirley will be missed deeply by all those that knew her. Predeceased by her loving husband Gerald Lee Martin who died on February 18, 2014. She was also predeceased by her older brother Ralph. Shirley leaves behind her loving family; son Gary Martin and his companion Donna Hale of Chesterfield, VA, son James Martin and his wife Patty of Piscataway, daughter Lisa Anzelone and her husband Bill of Green Brook and daughter Donna Ferreiro and her husband Mickey of Birmingham, AL. She will be missed by her nine grandchildren; Kayla, Chrissa, Stephanie, Alisha, Amanda, Matthew, Briana, Kaitlyn and Justin, and six great-grandchildren; Christian, Lukas, Thomas, Caden, Sadie, and Dominick, as well as her only sister; Marie and husband Philip of Henderson, NV.
Visitation will be held at Piscataway Funeral Home, 18 Stelton Road, Piscataway, NJ 08854 on Friday, February 3, 2023 from 4pm until 8pm and on Saturday, February 4, 2023 beginning 8:45am.
Prayers will be held 9:15am in the funeral home on Saturday, February 4, 2023 followed by a 10:00am funeral mass at Our Lady of the Mount Roman Catholic Church in Warren. Entombment will follow in the Mausoleum of the Holy Spirit located within Resurrection Burial Park in Piscataway.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations sent in Shirley’s name to the Alzheimer’s Association (www.alz.org) would be appreciated.
