Bruce,my oldest brother and March 30th birthday sharer. Though he had that birthdate for 9 years before I arrived..on his birthday that year, I guess he didn't get a party but got me as a surprise instead. He would jokingly tell me for years that gifts could be returned!
Being the youngest, and only girl, all my brother's seemed so much older than I was..Bruce especially. He could do so many things I couldn't yet..cross the street,go around the corner to the candy store..cut across Victory Blvd to the A&P. He was so worldly!.. he got to stay up late to watch The Beatles on Ed Sullivan! Sometimes I would ask him,"where are you going, can I go too?" He'd say "I'm going crazy,do you wanna come?"
By the time I was in 6th grade,he was going in to the Air Force. In his letters home,he would ask how I was doing in school. He would ask how all of us were doing..I guess as the oldest,he felt the need to watch out for us in a way..and I know he will continue to do just that.
Bruce started my love for The Beatles as did Brian & Brett.. that's the soundtrack of my childhood. I believe I first heard their music from my crib. He taught me some finer points of chess and probably a ZILLION things that I now know not realizing he was the teacher by example.
As the years went by,we all were raising families, working, etc. but still keeping in touch as much as distance in miles & time permitted. You always think there is more time...
My mom always stated that God should send you your first child to practice on..if you really mess up,you can send it back..bizarre and hilarious as that sounds and of course is impossible,Bruce was Mom's "practice child". Well,he turned out just fine. A great son, brother, husband, dad & friend.
Bruce,I will miss our birthday calls to each other, new ancestry news from your researching, your political perspectives and too many other things that I just can't wrap my mind around yet. It is a great sadness that sits in my mind and heart for the entire family but most of all Geralyn,Rob,Steph & Dan. I will miss you for the rest of my days. I love you~rest easy
