Obituary of Marta Leonardis

South Plainfield – Marta Leonardis, 65, passed away on Saturday, September 30, 2023, at JFK Medical Center in Edison, NJ.

Born in Hungary to the late Jozsef and Maria Berencsi, Marta visited the United States for the first time in 1976 at the age of 16. Two years later she returned and married Giovanni Leonardis, a connection made through family members. Giovanni and Marta settled in South Plainfield, where they raised their three sons.

Over the years, Marta worked at a family dress shop, helping out wherever she could, but eventually learning to be a seamstress. She also worked at the Corner Deli in South Plainfield before working for Wegmans in Bridgewater, where she has been for over 18 years.

Marta’s true passion was her family and being a mom. Over the years, she has also grown to care for the cats in her neighborhood.

Marta is survived by her husband of 47 years, Giovanni Leonardis, and her three sons, Joe, and his wife Maria, Pete, and John. She will also be missed by her sisters-in-law, Angela and Teresa Leonardis, and brother-in-law Dick Leonardis, along with a host of extended relatives and friends.

A visitation will be held at the South Plainfield Funeral Home, 2456 Plainfield Avenue, South Plainfield, NJ, on Wednesday, October 4, 2023, from 2 PM to 4 PM and from 7 PM to 9 PM.

A funeral mass will be held at Our Lady of Czestochowa RC Church,  809 Hamilton Blvd, South Plainfield, NJ, on Thursday, October 5, 2023, at 10:30 AM. Family and friends may gather at the funeral home beginning at 9:30 AM.

Burial will follow at Holy Redeemer Cemetery and Mausoleum, 1734 Clinton Ave, South Plainfield, NJ.

In lieu of flowers, the Leonardis family has asked that donations be made to the Make-A-Wish Foundation, in Marta’s name.
