Obituary of Keith A. Cunningham
Piscataway, N.J – Keith A. Cunningham passed away peacefully one day before his eighty-fifth birthday on Friday, June 28, 2024 at 1PM at his home surrounded by family following a valiant battle with cancer.
Born in the British West Indies in the island of Saint Vincent & the Grenadines, Keith immigrated to the United States in the 1960s at the age of 26.
After spending time preparing to sit the University of Cambridge examination in England and successfully passing the examination, he graduated and went on to work for the government in the Lands and Surveys Department. There he was awarded a scholarship to attend training in the profession of Topography in Trinidad & Tobago, another neighboring, Caribbean nation.
On completion, he returned to his position in St Vincent.
Soon after returning from Trinidad, he was called by the US Embassy and granted an immigrant visa to the US. He arrived in New York, in the middle of winter in January 1965.
After a brief stay in California, where he lived in a small seaside town called La Jolla, a few miles outside San Diego, he headed back east to New York City. While in California, he wasted no time in seeking employment as he was resolved not to be a dependent of his great aunt. Having failed to find employment in California, he returned to New York in April of 1965, staying with friends until he could find employment as all of his family was back in St.Vincent and he had to support himself.
He finally got the ear and understanding of a personnel manager in the then Manufacturers Hanover Trust Co. He was offered employment working a midnight to 8:00 AM shift for which he gladly accepted. He attended Brooklyn College during the day and worked at night and eventually obtained a bachelors’ degree in Economics with a minor in Taxation. Keith was eventually able to switch over to day time hours where he worked his way through various supervisory positions. In 1972, he joined the rank of management when he was promoted to the official title of Assistant Manager. He was put in several positions of responsibility and continued to get promotions. On retirement in 2005, he left as a vice president of JPMorgan Chase. He subsequently was invited back as a consultant of Tax Compliance as a result of his strong work ethic and professionalism. Shortly after that, he successfully ventured into Real Estate up until his leukemia diagnosis in 2021.
Keith was a recipient of many recognitions. Notably, he was featured in Jet Magazine for the Black Achievers in Industry Award from the YMCA of Greater New York, Harlem and the Harry Denman Evangelism Award from the Foundation for Evangelism. Keith got married in 1972 to Antoinette Williams, bought his first home in 1973, moving from Brooklyn to Queens, New York. In 1976, he bought a home in New Jersey where he still lived at the time of his death on June 28th, 2024, on the eve of his birthday on Saturday, June 29th, 1939. He would have been 85 years old.
As a faithful member of the Christ United Methodist Church in Piscataway, Keith was devoted to bible studies and devotions. Keith was a Lay Leader of the Christ United Methodist Church in Piscataway, NJ for decades and he represented his church on many conference committees.
His wise and gentle spirit will be deeply missed by all who knew him. Among survivors are his wife of 51 years, Antoinette Y. Cunningham, his only daughter Trisha J. Cunningham-McMurray (spouse Robert E. McMurray), granddaughter Tatyana Iris Antonieta McMurray, brothers Norris O. Cunningham and Ken DeBique, sisters in England and Grenada Lynn Margaret Qwusu-Bosteng and Margaret DeBique Alexis respectively, goddaughter Kisha Rose, godson Jason Richardson. As well as his in-laws both here in the United States, Lester Williams, Eula Williams-Bagley, Richard Williams, Anthony Williams, Frances Williams-Yearwood, Randolph Williams as well as extended family in Panamá City, Panamá.
Family and friends are invited to gather in Christ United Methodist Church, 485 Hoes Lane, Piscataway NJ 08854 from 9-10AM, where a funeral service will begin at 10AM.
Cremation will be held privately.

Nacido en las Antillas Británicas, en la isla de San Vicente y las Granadinas, Keith emigró a los Estados Unidos en la década de 1960, a la edad de 26 años.
