Joan G. Cantamessa Piscataway- Joan G. Cantamessa, 81, passed away peacefully in her sleep on Wednesday, October 26, 2011 at home. Born to the late Robert and Gladys in Westfield, Joan grew up working on the family farm, Ditzel Farm, in Scotch Plains. She later resided in South Plainfield for most of her life before settling to Piscataway in 2001. In her younger years, Joan was an avid bowler and a girl scout leader. She had always enjoyed reading, taking trips to Atlantic City and watching T.V. In addition, Joan was a life member of the South Plainfield Rescue Squad where she was an active member for 36 years. As one of the first women member, she volunteered at various capacities within the squad, was the recipient of several awards and was instrumental with the Women's Auxiliary as well. Joan is predeceased by her husband Louis, a daughter; Joanne Eroglu, a grandson; Jeffrey Jr., a son in law; John Fizur, her twin sister; Doris Tripet and two brother; Richard and Robert Ditzel. Surviving are her three daughters; Dianne Mills and her husband Robert, Nancy Colvard and her husband Roger, and Patricia Fizur, a son; Jeffrey Cantamessa and his wife Barbara and her sister; Eleanor Sieke. Also surviving are 10 Grandchildren, Tracy, Michele, Kristie, Robbie, Melissa, Laura, Eric, Jessica, Matthew and Faith and 14 great grandchildren. In addition, she also leaves behind her dedicated care giver Elena Fabian and many nieces and nephews. Funeral services will begin on Saturday, October 29, 2011 at 9:30 AM in the McCriskin - Gustafson Home For Funerals 2425 Plainfield Ave. South Plainfield, NJ 07080. Interment will follow in Hillside Cemetery, Scotch Plains. Family and fiends are invited to attend the visitation hours on Friday, from 2-4 & 7-9 PM in the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, donations in her memory may be made to the South Plainfield Rescue Squad, 2520 Plainfield Avenue, South Plainfield, NJ 07080.
