Charles J. Penkunas South Plainfield - Charles J. Penkunas, 93, passed away on Wednesday morning, March 16, 2011 at the Highlands - Care One facility in Edison. Born and raised in Minersville, PA., he was one of ten children born to the late Adam and Anna Penkunas. He entered the United States Navy during WWII and served his county as a aviation radioman prior to being honorably discharged. He later resided in Kearny and Elizabeth for most of his life prior to settling to South Plainfield in 1989. Initially working in the coal mines near his home town, Charles was a hardworking individual who worked numerous shifts at the former Ballantine Brewery in Newark and later for the former Red Star Yeast. He enjoyed being active all of his life, spending time dancing and doing yard work. In addition, Charles was a die hard Philadelphia Eagles and Phillies fan who also donated to various wildlife organizations. Predeceased by his first wife, Florence who died in 1985, he is also predeceased by seven siblings. Surviving are his wife, Rose Krylowski Penkunas, a daughter, Celeste Penkunas, two sons, Gregory and Mark and two sisters, Mary Denis and Nell Penkunas. Also surviving are four beloved grandchildren, Angela, Kristen, Michael and Samantha. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, March 22, 2011 at 9:15 AM in the McCriskin - Gustafson Home For Funerals, 2425 Plainfield Avenue, South Plainfield, NJ 07080, followed by a 10:00 AM funeral mass in Our Lady of Czestochowa Church, South Plainfield. Entombment will follow in Forest Green Memorial Park Mausoleum, Old Bridge. Family and friends may attend the visitation hours on Monday, from 2-4 & 7-9 PM in the funeral home.
