South Plainfield - John Habley, 77 died on Tuesday, September 2, 2014 in the Haven Hospice at JFK Medical Center in Edison. Born in Chicago, Illinois, John grew up in Westfield and graduated from Westfield High School. After graduating from high school Mr. Habley attended the University of Miami in Florida where he met the love of his life Betty Jo. Following college John enlisted in the U.S. Army. During his enlistment he was stationed in Japan and was honorably discharged in 1963. A resident of the borough of South Plainfield for over 50 years, John was active in the community. He was a manager in the South Plainfield Junior Baseball Club and the South Plainfield Ponytail Association. He served on the Planning Board, was a member of the Republican Committee and the South Plainfield Community Pool and was also active with the Boy Scouts. In addition, John was an avid bowler, NY Yankees fan and loved cooking for family and friends. His most recent activity was serving as a greeter at the Rutgers Golf Course in Piscataway. He is predeceased by his sister Barbara Parkhurst. Surviving are his loving wife of 57 years Betty Habley, his daughter Susan Habley of Branchburg, two sons; Jeffrey and his wife Judith of Wayne and Mark and his wife Frances Drake of Morgan and his three grandchildren; Stephen and Mathew Blyth and Nicholas Habley. John is also survived by his brother in law Deane Parkhurst and many nieces and nephews. Funeral Services will be held on Monday, September 8, 2014 at 11:30am in the McCriskin - Gustafson Home For Funerals, 2425 Plainfield Ave., South Plainfield, NJ 07080. Cremation services will follow privately. Visitation will be held on Sunday, September 7, 2014 from 3-7pm in the funeral home. In Lieu of flowers donations have been requested to the American Cancer Society www.cancer.org.
