Obituary of Mathew R. DeVito

South Plainfield - Mathew R. DeVito, 85, died peacefully surrounded by his family on Sunday, March 24, 2013 at JFK Medical Center in Edison. Born in Brooklyn, NY Matty was raised in New Jersey and had lived in several towns throughout the state before settling in South Plainfield in 1955. For 34 years he worked as a Meat Department Manager. A Veteran of the U.S. Navy, Matty served overseas during WWII prior to his honorable discharge. He is a member of the South Plainfield VFW Post 6763 and the South Plainfield Knights of Columbus Council # 6203. Matty was a faithful member of Sacred Heart RC Church in South Plainfield. He served the church with great faith and participated in various church functions throughout the years. He served as a Eucharistic Minister, taught in their CCD and with RCIA program for 25 years, where he was recognized as Teacher of the Year and was also a member of the church choir. In addition, Mr. DeVito assisted the church during their annual fish dinners and funstival as well as their marriage encounter program. In 2006 his beloved Millie passed away. Matty's passions were his wife, his family and dancing his heart away on the dance floor while singing along with Sinatra. Surviving are his daughters; Laurie DeVito - Cunningham and her husband Edward of Brooklyn, NY, Patricia Callanan and her husband Shawn of South Plainfield, NJ and Ralph DeVito and his wife Linda of Marlboro, NJ, his sister Loretta DeVito and brother Joseph DeVito both of FL. Also surviving are his grandchildren; Tony, Lisa, Renee, Dylan, Emily and Shawn. Funeral Services will be held on Wednesday, March 27, 2013 at 10:45am in the McCriskin - Gustafson Home For Funerals, 2425 Plainfield Avenue., South Plainfield followed by an 11:30am funeral mass at Sacred heart RC Church, South Plainfield. Cremation will follow privately. Visitation will be held on Tuesday, March 26, 2013 from 2-4 & 7-9pm in the funeral home. In Lieu of flowers donations can be made to St. Jude Children's Hospital, 501 St. Jude Way, Memphis, TN 3810
