Obituary of Thomas C. Smith

South Plainfield - Thomas C. Smith Sr., 82, died on Friday, September 5, 2014 at JFK Medical Center in Edison. Born and raised in North Plainfield, Tom settled to South Plainfield 62 years ago. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict and was a member of the South Plainfield American Legion Chaumont Post 243. Tom was a Detective for the South Plainfield Police Department retiring in 1982. In addition, Mr. Smith also belonged to the New Jersey Building Laborers Union Local 156 in New Brunswick. He is predeceased by his parents; Charles and Julia Perkowsky and two brothers; Edward Smith and John Perkowsky Surviving are his wife Mary "Theresa", his daughter Diana Smith of Hawaii, two sons; Thomas Jr. and his wife Laura of Milltown and Michael and his fiancé Katherine Webb of Edison, two sisters; Lillian Ziomek and Theresa Newman both of North Plainfield and a brother Frank Perkowsky and his wife Marie also of North Plainfield. Also surviving are 10 grandchildren along with an expected great granddaughter on the way. Funeral Services will be held on Thursday, September 11, 2014 at 10:45am in the McCriskin - Gustafson Home For Funerals, 2425 Plainfield Ave., South Plainfield, NJ 07080 followed by an 11:30am funeral mass at Sacred Heart RC Church, South Plainfield. Interment will follow at Hillside Cemetery, Scotch Plains. Visitation will be held on Wednesday, September 10, 2014 from 2-4 & 6-8pm in the funeral home.
